Not to be confused with Smoke Grenade

"I know what you're wondering. "What's in the canister?" I could tell ya, but then I'd have to kill you. Hehe. I'm only mucking about, relax. As for what's in the canister, it's best you don't ask."

James "Smoke" Porter is a Defending Operator featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. A Medium Armored Operator, Smoke is equipped with three Compound Z8 Remote Gas Grenades, remotely detonated gas canisters that will damage and possibly kill whoever it comes in contact with, whether they be friend or foe.

Biography

Background

Porter was not an academic, although in secondary school, he excelled in science. He took a particular interest in biology and the unit on dissection. During his gap year, Porter enlisted in the British Army, using a fake ID to circumvent parental consent.

Psychological Profile

He is a known thrill seeker with very little regard for his personal safety. He is fearless in battle and can be a great asset for defensive maneuvers, however he seems to enjoy the havoc and chaos of war. He uses a remote detonated dispersal mine filled with a gas of undisclosed contents to impede hostile advances.

Relevant Training

After basic training, Porter was stationed in Belfast. Finding the posting to be a bit dull in the wake of the March 2007 treaty, he joined the Army Boxing Team as a middleweight.

Gameplay Description

Smoke is equipped for enemy denial. With his Gas Grenades, a detonation in the right spot will create a choke point that can potentially leave Attackers at risk of damage if they're flanked, whilst their safest route is affected by a cloud of toxic gas.

As Smoke

  • Smoke's Gas Grenades can latch onto most surfaces. Once activated, the Gas Grenades will release its toxic contents.
  • The smoke deals 15 points of damage every half-second, regardless of the Operator's Armor and Speed rating.
  • This property makes Smoke effective against shield Operators, as they are not only slow but also typically reliant on their shield being a damage sponge.
  • Although Smoke is immune to the Gas, all other Operators, including allies, aren't immune to it. This includes the other SAS Operators: Mute, Sledge, and Thatcher.
  • Communicate with allies to avoid hurting friendlies.
  • The Gas will also damage the Hostage in the Hostage gamemode, and can even kill them, so be attentive of where the Gas Grenade is placed.
  • The Gas Grenades can be detonated from a remote location, thus Smoke does not need to remain near the Grenade to use it.
  • The gas of the Gas Grenade will spread parallel to the surface that it is attached to and not so much perpendicularly. For a maximum area of effect, it is best if the Grenade is attached to the floor or the ceiling.
  • The Gas Grenades are taped with orange duct tape, making them easy to spot for Attacking Operators. Take care to toss the Grenades in places that incoming enemies will not easily notice.
  • The Gas Grenade can be used like Nitro Cells, tossed and immediately detonated as a quick Gas Grenade in a firefight.
  • Even if enemies are not caught within the Gas, the Gas is thick enough to act like a Smoke Grenade, blocking vision in the given area.

As an Ally

  • Be wary of where Smoke places his Gas Grenades. Only he is immune to the gas. Communicate to avoid being within their area of effect.
  • If you have Barbed Wire, place it in locations Smoke may be able to use for choke points with his Gas Grenades.

As an Enemy

  • When facing Smoke as an Attacker, be wary of your surroundings to avoid being caught in the vicinity of a Gas Grenade.
  • Operators who are meant to take care of electronics, such as Thatcher and IQ, are suited for removing the Gas Grenades before they are detonated.
  • Although not immediate counters to the Gas Grenades, Light Armored Operators are able to escape the Gas quicker than Heavy Armored Operators. Thus, slower Operators should be careful not to overextend themselves in a firefight against Smoke, or else they are more at risk of being enveloped by the toxic clouds.
  • On top of their slower speed, Operators using Ballistic Shields are not protected from the harmful chemicals of the Gas Grenade. Such Operators should take great precaution before Smoke.
  • Avoid huddling up in a corner or a small room, as Smoke can take advantage of that to trap you in Gas.

Compound Z8 Grenade

"Sets remote detonated toxic gas charges"
— Compound Z8 Grenade Description

Porter requested a portable defense system that could deliver the most damage to intruders in a targeted area. Fashioned with a remote detonator, Porter can view the results from a distance. The mines are filled with a collection of biological substances, that on their own are inert, but when combined, have a more volatile effect. The resulting concoction incapacitates anyone exposed to it.

Trivia

  • Despite all SAS Operators wearing gas masks, Smoke's gas grenade will still damage them if exposed. This is due to the other operators wearing just the SAS BDU (not a full NBC suit) and a gas mask of varying design, whereas Smoke dons a full NBC suit, which also protects the skin from the gas.
  • Smoke's last name, Porter, may be a reference to Porton Down, a United Kingdom government military science park, which developed biological weapons.
  • The gas inside the gas grenade appears to be the same gas used by the White Masks during the Article 5 Situation scenario. This may only be purely visual and may be completely different kinds of gas.
  • Smoke's original date of birth was stated to be on May 14, 1990. The year was later changed to 1981 with the release of the game.
