The Special Assault Team (Japanese: 特殊急襲部隊, Tokushu Kyūshū Butai) is a counter-terrorism unit in some Prefectural Police Departments supervised by the Japanese National Police Agency. Its origin can be traced back to the Special Armed Police who were trained in September 1977 to combat criminal incidents as a response to the Dhaka Incident. They saw their first successful deployment in January 1979 during the Mitsubishi Bank hostage incident and were involved in many other counter-terrorist operations since then. These specially trained SAP members were officially put into the newly established Special Assault Team in 1996 after training for a year with the GSG 9, GIGN, and British SAS.
It is an available organization introduced in the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege: Operation Red Crow expansion.
Officially classified until 1996. Japan's Special Assault Team (SAT) has since been collaborating with the SAS, GIGN, GSG 9 and FBI SWAT. Comprised of small highly trained teams spread throughout Japan, the SAT is a paramilitary counter-terrorism unit. Highly proficient at building and tubular assaults, they excel in urban warfare.
- The Armbands worn by SAT Operators are marked with "愛知県警" (Romaji: Aichi Kenkei), which means Aichi Prefectural Police. This matches their bio description of both Operators operating through them.
- The old SAT patch is utilised on the Operators' uniforms while the new one is used in their in-game bios.
