The M16 refers to a family of assault rifles all manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Copmany that all chamber the 5.56x45mm NATO round. It was made to replace the earlier M14 battle rifle. The M16A2 and A4 variants fire in three-round burst or semi-automatic, while the original M16A1 and A3 variants fire fully-automatic or semi-automatic.[1]
Although the M16 itself has not appeared in the Rainbow Six universe, its burst fire variants have. These variants are the M16A2 and M16A4.
The M16 rifle family are all categorized as assault rifles in the Rainbow Six universe. The M16A2 appears in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow, while the M16A4 was supposed to appear in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Patriots, up until its cancellation.
