"I am disgraced. I have betrayed both my country and my God. But what else was I to do? There was no money; my men had no food. All that came from Moscow was empty promises. Why should honest men starve while gangsters prosper?"
— Viktor Rudenko

Colonel Viktor Rudenko is a character featured in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear

Biography[]

Viktor Rudenko was born on September 2, 1953 in Omsk, Russia. He graduated from the Soviet Military Academy in 1973. From 1981 to 1988, he served in Afghanistan and was the commander of the Kunar Battalion of the 66th separate infantry brigade of Dzhelalabad from 1985 to 1987. During this time, he was wounded twice in combat. In 2002, Rudenko was the acting commander of the Astasanov Nuclear Weapons Storage Facility near Murmansk. By this time, he had grown disgruntled with the Russian government who repeated offered him empty promises and failed to provide him with funds and supplies for his men. As a result, Rudenko made a deal with Maxim Kutkin to supply him with plutonium from the storage facility.

An operation in St. Petersburg, Rainbow recovered a portion of this material and traced it back to Rudenko's facility. The Russian Government publicly denied this but was secretly extremely embarrassed. With little confidence in his own forces, the Russian President agreed to allow Rainbow to infiltrate the Storage Facility in order to capture Rudenko and secure the remaining nuclear material. Rainbow was able to successfully accomplish this on January 21st, 2002.

During his interrogation, the disgraced Rudenko revealed that he had sold plutonium to Kutkin twice before, enough material for Vezirzade to construct four low-yield bombs. Rudenko was then presumably charged and then disciplined for his crimes.
