The AKS-74U Carbine (the "U" suffix means "Ukorochennyj" in Russian = "Shortened" in English) has been developed in the late 1970s from the AKS-74. The AKS-74U was intended as a Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) for tanks, guns, helicopters and other vehicle crews, and for the special operations forces, who required a compact but relatively powerful individual automatic weapon. The AKS-74U has the size and effective range of a typical Sub-Machine Gun, but has advantage of the general issue, assault rifle ammunition and magazines, as well as the parts interchangeability with the general issue assault rifle, the AK-74. Since its introduction the AKS-74U, unofficially known as a "Ksyukha" (variation of a Russian woman name) or "okurok" (cigarette stub), also had been issued to various Police and other Law Enforcement forces across the USSR and the Post-USSR countries, including Russia. This rifle is chambered in 5.45x39mm. Knowing this, the range should be higher and the damage should be much lower than it is in-game. In the trailers, it says that the AKS-74U is chambered for 7.62x39mm M43, but that is wrong, since it is chambered in 5.45x39mm. It is the most common weapon online because of its high power, good accuracy and fast fire rate. In the campaign it has mostly replaced the AK-47 in the hands of terrorists except in the prologue level, where the AK-47 is used in the hands of most terrorists, the rest sporting MAC11s. Gunsights should be commonplace on the AKS-74U, not least because it has unacceptably obstuctive iron sights, making it impossible to see anything below or to the sides of your target.
Alternatively in-game, the AK-74U can become a long range threat by firing in single-shot mode. There is minimal damage drop-off at long range and can keep a heavily armored opponent's head down. In the semi-auto firing mode, a tactical player can take out opponents in windows and through penatrable cover with accuracy. The recoil makes using the ACOG or 6x scope slightly difficult, however.
